Why security matters

It is important that your website is well secured. Especially if you collect personal data from customers, you want the best protection. If you have a contact form on your website, you are already collecting personal data.

Because of the GDPR, there is a risk of a high fine if personal data leaks. You want to prevent that. It would also be a shame if you had to have your website rebuilt from scratch, because that costs a lot of time and money.

Has my website been hacked?

It can happen that your website is hacked without you noticing. It is obvious when your website suddenly goes offline with a message like “this website has been hacked by …”, but often you notice nothing. A website can be hacked in many ways, for example because:

• internal links have changed and lead to different pages than intended
• spam is sent to others from your website
• valuable data is stolen without you noticing

How do I secure my website?

There are several ways to secure your website well. All websites are well secured at the time of delivery, but a website ages. The older the website, the greater the chance of security vulnerabilities.

One way to solve this is to always keep your website up to date. For WordPress websites that means updating the WordPress version, the theme and the plugins. A scan with, for example, Wordfence is also useful to see whether there are infected files on your website that need to be removed.
